Noto is an Italian municipality of 24 000 inhabitants situated in the southeast of Sicily, in the province of Syracuse. In 1693, an earthquake hit Noto, and completely destroyed it. From there, three architects, Labisi, Sinatra and Gagliardi reconstructed and rethought the city based on a Baroque style.
Although Noto is classified as a UNESCO world heritage site for its typical baroque art and architecture, its provinces are still placed under the constant threats of the risks of earthquake and the eruptions of Etna.
Noto spreads out on two levels: on the top of the city, the old center is on the tray, and a more recent part is on the slope below. In the most recent part, there are the buildings of the nobility and religious orders of the 18th century. The Duomo is a well-known cathedrale of this part of the city, built by Vincezo Sinatra in 1776. The town possesses nine religious establishments and numerous palazzi. One of the most famous palazzo is the Palazzo Ducezio, constructed in 1742, which is today the town hall of Noto.
